The first day of preschool for Katie is tomorrow. I am so excited for her to start on this new journey but at the same time, I am sad. For the past 3 years, she has been with me almost every day since I became a stay at home mom. I am not worried about her adjustment to preschool because she has wanted to go there ever since Michael did. In fact, her teacher even remarked about that! Maybe it's because she is our baby and it seemed like this day was so far away. Now that it's here, I am wondering where the time has gone. When she was younger, I felt like we had so much time until this day came.
Katie will only be at school for 3 mornings a week from 9-11:45. I know the time will fly by but I think the first few days are going to be quite an adjustment for me too. It will be nice to be able to run errands by myself and get some things done around the house but I know that I will be so happy to see her at 11:45. It also helps that she is going to have the same teacher that Michael did so I already know what to expect.
Before she went to bed, she told me that she was going to miss me while she was at school. I told her I am going to miss her too!

End of Kindergarten Celebration
Today was the end of kindergarten celebration at Michael's school. All of the kindergarten classes came into the auditorium for a short program. The classes sang 4 songs and then they all sat down to watch a slide show of pictures throughout the year. I loved seeing Michael up there performing. I can't believe that this school year is already over. At times, it seemed like it was moving so slowly but looking back, it just flew by.
Michael really enjoyed his first year of school. He was asked what his favorite thing about kindergarten was. I was a little surprised at his answer because I figured it would be PE, recess or lunch. This is what he wrote:
He has made new friends and become better friends with others. I know he is going to miss some of his friends next year when they are in a different class. Hopefully they can stay in touch and have some play dates this summer.
One of his teachers is retiring after this year and we will be sad to see her go. She has really been great with Michael.
The program was a great end to his first year of elementary school!

Happy Birthday Michael
It's been 6 years since you entered our lives, changing them forever for the better. I try not to think about the fact that you are 1/3 of the way to 18 because it makes me sad when I realize how fast time is flying by. I want to freeze so many moments with you so I can replay them over and over in my head.
This year has been a big one for you. You started kindergarten in the fall and rode the school bus by yourself for the first time. You are now quite a pro at riding the bus and happily come down the steps each afternoon. You learned to read and can now write some words by sounding them out. I love to sit and listen to you read to me, Dad or Katie.
Last summer you learned to swim by yourself. When we went to the pool for the first time this season, you showed that you haven't forgotten anything and have even made progress, like jumping into the deep end without someone being there to catch you.
Your love for building Legos has grown and you can now put most of them together alone if you put your mind to it. I can just stand there watching you play with them and rebuild them to make new creations. Your imagination is an amazing thing.
You and Katie spend most of your time wanting what the other one has but once in a while, you play nicely together. When you do, this warms my heart. I can see that you truly love your sister and will be her protector in years to come. She looks up to you, which is why she follows you around and wants to do what you do. Enjoy it now while it lasts.
Michael, you are growing into a wonderful little boy but you still have lots of hugs and kisses for Dad, Katie and I. Your sweet nature is one of my favorite things about you. I love when you hug me and tell me I'll always be your best mommy. We all love you very much and so happy you are a part of our family. Happy Birthday!!

34 Months
Katie turned 34 months old today. I vividly remember the day that Michael turned 34 months old. It was the same day that Katie was born. It's hard for me to grasp how much time has gone by since Katie was born. It's getting harder to remember how Michael was at this age. I am glad that I am blogging more now than I did when Michael was this age because I will be able to look back and see what the kids were doing.
At 34 months, Katie still takes one afternoon nap on most days, unless we are out or away from home. She is a creature of habit and definitely sleeps best at home. We still rock to sleep for naps but when she moved to her big girl bed, we stopped rocking at night and I don't turn on her lullaby CD anymore. She is growing up too fast.
Her conversation skills amaze me just about every day. The things that come out of her mouth are funny and interesting. She listens to EVERYTHING that everyone says and repeats it back when it's appropriate. She loves to talk and talk and talk (I wonder where she gets this from). I can't even begin to think of how many words are in her vocabulary but they include words like frustrated and beautiful. She can recite almost the entire alphabet and knows how to count from 1-10. She also knows some Spanish, thanks to Dora and Diego!
Katie loves to read books. Her favorites right now are anything that has Dora, princesses or Fancy Nancy. She also likes the Sounds Like Reading series by Brian Cleary, which includes The Peaches on the Beaches and The Thing on the Wing Can Sing. I read her several books a day and she reads many more to herself. I read one book before nap and then she reads it to herself. I love watching her "read" and absorb all that the book has to offer. She also enjoys reading books with the Leapfrog Tag pen.
She is also quite the techie, taking after her dad, mom and brother. Katie loves to play the iPod touch and Kindle Fire. One of her favorite games is Angry Birds. She also likes to watch Michael play Wii and she tries her best to play with him. Cell phones are also a big hit with her. The only electronic device she doesn't seem to be too fond of is the camera.
She can pick out her clothes and get herself dressed most days, which is nice. She has very definitive fashion opinions and can match her clothes pretty well. Her favorite item to choose is shoes and she has many pairs. She still does not like to wear her hair up in a ponytail or put back in a bow, which is getting more difficult as her hair gets longer and longer.
Katie does not eat everything in sight like she used to but if it's something she likes, she will try to eat as much of it as she can. She loves to eat cookies and a special treat, like candy.
This age has been quite trying at times but Katie is 2 so I didn't expect any less. She gets quite upset when she doesn't get her way and can throw some back arching tantrums. That being said, she is usually fairly quick to calm down and you can reason with her much more than you could with Michael, even though she definitely has a stubborn streak.
We have been enjoying Katie very much, tantrums and all. Can't wait to see what the next few months bring before she turns 3!

Out of the mouth of a 2 year old
Katie has been saying some of the funniest things lately. Having a conversation with her is highly entertaining. She has started to repeat some of the things that she hears Michael say too.
Some of her recent favorites include: "How you dare me" (How dare you?), "I never get to eat that" (courtesy of Michael), and "Oh, man". It's pretty hysterical to hear these phrases coming out of her mouth. Her tone of voice makes it even funnier as she is very dramatic. She also likes to start sentences off with statements like, "you remember the other day when I....."
Having a conversation with Katie is like talking to a 3 or 4 year old. She is constantly asking questions and making observations. We were at the grocery store earlier this week and I asked her to help me count an item that we were buying. I started with 1, 2 and then she finished with 3, 4, 5. We have also been working on manners. If Katie catches you talking with your mouth full, she says, "You shouldn't talk with your mouth full".
I tried to get a video of her talking but as soon as she realizes that you are filming her, she turns to the camera and says "stop saying cheese". I was able to get a few phrases while her back was turned to me one day. This is such a great age for talking as things really start to come together.

A Serious Conversation
Last night I was putting Michael to bed when he started asking me some questions.
Michael : "Where is Grandee's (my mom) dad?"
Me: "He died a few years ago."
Michael: "Why did he die?"
Me: "Because he was old."
Michael: "Where is PopPop's (my dad) mom?"
Me: "She died when I was pregnant with you."
Michael: "Where is Grandaddy's (Todd's dad) mom?"
Me: "She died too."
Then he started crying and saying that he would miss his grandparents when he died. He said this about 3 or 4 times before I finally told him that he would see everyone again in heaven. I didn't have the heart to tell him that his grandparents would probably die before he would. He really took me by surprise when he was asking these questions. He was so sad that it made me start crying too.
It makes me wonder what questions he will ask in the future and if we will be ready to answer them. I guess we better start preparing now.

My Aching Back
When I woke up this morning, my back was hurting pretty badly. I can't pinpoint one specific incident that would have caused it. However, I suspect that taking 2 kids to the pool and being their own human jungle gym may have had something to do with it.
Michael has recently starting jumping to me in the pool. I usually try to stand a good distance away from the wall so he can swim to me after he jumps in. I didn't get away from the wall fast enough one time, which resulted in a bruise on my hip. And while he is doing all of these acrobatics, I am holding Katie in the other arm. I alternate between keeping her out of harm's way and keeping her from trying to swim away.
As long as I was sitting relatively still today, my back felt fine. But if I had to twist or bend down to pick up any of the food that Katie throws on the floor, it was killing me. I finally took some ibuprofen tonight in hopes that it will help me sleep and lessen my pain a bit. And I can only hope that tomorrow will be a better day.
One thing I have to say is that it sucks getting older. I feel like my body just isn't the same after having 2 kids. Oh, wait, it's not. I can only hope that staying active and chasing after the kids will keep me from having any further strains.

Time just keeps going and going
Katie turned 16 months old on Friday. She is quite the toddler now and no longer our little baby. She is growing more and more and getting so tall.
Katie still loves to eat like there is no tomorrow. She will put as much food into her mouth as she can fit and even tries to put more in when it's already full. Over the past few weeks, I have been giving her a fork or spoon to use while eating. She does pretty well getting it to her mouth but is working on actually getting food on it. I am hoping to put an end to the throwing the food off the tray when she is done. That doesn't happen very often though because she almost always eats everything, unless she is full!
She is starting to understand what to do when you tell her to do something. I can tell her that we are getting ready to leave and she walks over to the door. When it's time for bed, I tell her to say good night to Todd and Michael and she does. Then we walk down the hall to her room and she closes the door behind us while saying "good night". It's so cute!
The diaper situation is still going on. I know that it's only a phase and will pass but it can get messy sometimes. I am tired of seeing her walk around the house with her hands down her pants, never knowing what she is going to pull out. I don't want to make a big deal about it but she has to know it's not OK to take the contents of her diaper out!
Katie is learning more and more words every day. I love to hear her talk. She has a low voice and I am always surprised to hear it coming out of her mouth. She has begun to do some counting with 5, 6, 7, and 8. Some of her new words are ball, eye, and book. She also says "choo-choo" if you start playing with trains.
I love watching her and Michael interact now. He has been being very sweet to her and lets her know what she should and should not do. He's my little helper. He also likes to pick out her clothes and let me know that he is going to show her how to use the potty when it's time. I am finally seeing them play together without there being a fight every time. Michael still asks to be left alone at times and I try to give him options that makes him feel like it's a privilege, not a right. Katie thinks he is hysterical and loves when he does things to make her laugh!
Here are a few new pics of Katie:

15 months and 1 day
Things around here have been pretty crazy since Todd's surgery last Friday night. We will go back to the doctor tomorrow morning for an eye re-check and to see what the next step is.
In the meantime, Katie turned 15 months old yesterday. It's so hard to believe it. The time is flying by and she is developing her personality day by day. She can now say several phrases and knows quite a few words. Some of her favorites are "Mom", "Let's Go", "no", "bye-bye", "night night". I can say "one" and she repeats "two". It's so much fun to hear her talk. She has a deep voice and it's funny to hear it come out of such a little person.
She has already had 2 haircuts at home, just her bangs, because they are growing like crazy. She wears 18 month clothing and a size 4.5 shoe. We go for her 15 month well check the week after next. I am interested to see how much she has grown since the 1 year checkup. She still loves to eat too! We put food on her tray and it just disappears.
Katie now gets mad and her body goes limp when she is having her mini tantrums. She has learned to laugh at herself. If you are laughing about something she will join in too. Her relationship with Michael is changing right before our eyes. They now play together and she loves to follow him around. He can still make her laugh like no one else.
I love being a mom to a little girl and am amazed at everything that she is learning and doing. It's such a different experience from raising a boy but yet it is just as rewarding!
**Unfortunately I don't have a picture for 15 months because our camera is broken and in the shop!**

A Glimpse into Michael's Future
Yesterday we had some friends over with their daughters. They are a few years older than Michael but he loves playing with them. He gets so excited whenever we tell him they are coming over.
Michael has a Power Wheels Harley Davidson Motorcycle. He rides the motorcycle all over the yard, circling the house. Since it was such a nice day yesterday, we spent a good bit of the afternoon outside. My friend and I were sitting on the porch with Katie when the motorcycle drove by. Her daughters and Michael were taking turns riding the motorcycle, two kids at a time. One of her daughters was on the front of the motorcycle driving it and Michael was sitting behind her, holding on with his hands around her waist. We joked with each other and commented that what we were seeing could become a reality someday!
It's hard to imagine Michael as a teenager and even harder for me to imagine him riding a motorcycle with a girl. But it was so cute to watch them as kids! I only wish I would have thought to take a picture of them but we were having too much fun watching.

One more month....
until Katie turns 1 year old! I know I always say this but I really don't have any idea where the time has gone. I have started planning for her party and can't wait to make the cake. It's one of my favorite things to do for the kids' birthdays.
This past month brought even more changes for Katie. She can now kiss you back when you kiss her but she doesn't know how to give a closed mouth kiss. She has just started clapping for herself and Michael when he does funny stuff. Katie is determined when she wants to do something and doesn't let anyone get in her way. If you move her away, she just goes right back for more.
Katie now has 6 teeth and is eating everything in sight. That includes puzzle pieces, doorstops and Starburst candy. Yes, I did say Starburst candy. Todd went to pick Katie up yesterday and he thought she had something in her mouth. He put his finger in her mouth and didn't feel anything. But then he smelled strawberry and found the candy. Guess we know what she likes. It was around this time that Michael ate his first Oreo and he now says that chocolate is his favorite.

Bathtime has become extra fun for Katie now. She used to lay down in the tub and kick her legs all around. She now realizes that if she rolls over, she can get herself up in the tub. It makes for a challenging bathtime, for sure.
No walking yet here so we are safe for a little while longer....just kidding! She is getting braver and cruises around the whole house. Katie is quite controlled when she wants to get down on the floor. She actually lowers herself down and uses her hand so she doesn't fall. Over the past few days, she has started to let go and try to stand up by herself. She is successful for about 5 seconds and then plops down on her diaper padded butt.
It's been a real joy to have Katie with us and to experience all of her firsts with her. Looking forward to her birthday next month as I can't wait to see her dig into the cake and ice cream (don't tell but she already had her first taste of ice cream and opened her mouth wider than I have ever seen).

Where did he go?
Today we took Michael to get a haircut this morning. The haircut ritual has developed from the fear that he had the first time (and the second and the third) to accepting that it has to be done to actually enjoying it. Michael likes to look good, as he has to approve what he wears every day. He is our little fashionista and I joke that he didn't come from me.
But as he was getting his hair cut, I realized that he was looking more like a little boy and less like a toddler. I wondered how time could fly by so fast and what happened to the baby that was born just a little more than 3 years ago. At the same time, I am really enjoying the little man that Michael is growing up to be. He definitely has his moments but he is so loving. And as the haircut was coming to an end and I looked over at him, I thought that he also seems so much bigger since Katie has arrived.

We are now the proud owners of a.......
2006 Toyota Sienna minivan!! This was an unexpected purchase for us but definitely one that was needed. The transmission in our 2002 Dodge Intrepid was done and it would have cost more to fix it than the car was worth. So this is the vehicle that we decided on. We also looked at the Toyota 4Runner, which would have been great when we just had Michael.
So far I really like it and I think Todd likes it too (even though he may not want to admit to it). If you would have asked me 5 years ago what kind of car I would be driving, I don't think a van would have entered the picture. At the time, I still had my 1990 Nissan 300ZX....maybe someday, in the distant future, I can be the owner of a sports car again. I sometimes don't feel old enough to be driving the van but then I realize that we have 2 kids now and it just seems right.
It's silver, has leather seats and quite a few other features that were not must haves, but are definitely welcome. We got a DVD player installed in it for long trips. I am sure that Michael will be enjoying that but he doesn't know about it yet and we want to keep it that way. If not, he will be asking for TV all the time!
