Goal!

Michael's last indoor soccer game of the season was tonight. Indoor soccer is organized differently than outdoor soccer. Everyone is part of the same team and the first 20-30 minutes are spent learning new skills or working on older ones. The second 30 minutes include a game in which the players are split into two teams. One team turns their shirts inside out to distinguish between the two.

Michael was on the blue team tonight. He played the goalie early in the game and got out into the field for the rest of the game. We were watching him kick the ball toward the goal. He gave it one hard kick and then he scored!! It was so thrilling to watch him get so excited about it as it was his first goal. The coach gave him a high five after he scored too. A few minutes later, he scored another goal.

We are so proud of him for scoring 2 goals but also for trying his best whenever he played. The main goal is to have fun and burn some energy. What a nice way to end the season though!

Show Me the Mommy (and Daughter)

I realized that I have very few pictures of just me. I have quite a few of me and the kids. Todd does a good job of taking pictures of everyone when he is with us but if not, I am the one taking the pictures. I think that Michael would do a good job of taking pictures if I wouldn't be so nervous about him touching everything on it.

This picture was taken at Michael's soccer game. Katie was eating while we were cheering for Michael.

Indoor Soccer

Michael had so much fun this fall playing soccer that we decided to sign him up for indoor soccer this winter. We figured that he would be able to get some exercise and burn off some energy since we can't get outside very much due to the colder weather. He does go outside most days at school but that's only for about 30 minutes, which is better than nothing.

Indoor soccer is run a bit differently than outdoor soccer. There are no set teams. Everyone practices together in a local elementary school gym. The entire month of December was devoted to learning skills and practicing them with the coaches and other players. The kids who play are ages 4, 5 and 6. We had a break for the past 2 weeks and it started up again this past week.

The uniforms came in and the jerseys are reversible. They started playing games this week too. Each night the coaches divide the kids up into 2 teams. One team turns their jerseys inside out and the other does not. The game is played in the entire gym and there are no boundaries. It's a lot of running up and down the gym, chasing the ball. Every player gets a turn to be the goalie and play the different positions. The game usually lasts about 45 minutes or so. Michael started getting tired about 30 minutes into the game and was ready to rest. He slept really well on Thursday night.

It's much more laidback than outdoor soccer is and the games almost seem more like practice games. One thing that's nice about it is the ability to play all of the positions and learning to play with different teammates. Michael keeps asking about when we are going to play outside again and why he isn't wearing his red shirt (jersey from the outdoor soccer). Maybe this fall......

Michael's First Trophy

This fall, Michael played his first organized sport, soccer, at a local park. His team was the Fury and he played with 9 other boys and girls. The final game was on Monday night and they had a team dinner to celebrate the end of the season last night.

All of the kids sat at one table and the adults sat at another one. The dinner was at a local pizza buffet. After the kids were done eating, the coaches called each child's name. They received a trophy and a certificate for participating. Michael proudly accepted his trophy. He kept looking at it today at home and pointed out that the player was wearing a shirt with buttons and his did not have any.

The First Game

After practicing for 2 weeks, tonight was the first game of the soccer season for Michael. Saturday was Opening Day and they had team pictures as well as a scrimmage. Tonight they played the same team they scrimmaged on Saturday, the Lynx. Michael's team is the Fury. It was fun to watch all of the kids trying to figure out how to play the game. A few of his teammates have played before but this is the first year for most of them.

The game consists of 4 7 minute quarters. All of the players on the team get equal playing time. A few of the players sat out for the first half and some sat out for the second half. Everyone gets a chance to play the different positions too. They don't keep score officially but I think everyone was keeping track. The other team scored the first few goals and then we scored a few. The final score was 4-4.

Michael really enjoyed playing the game and got a little upset when it was his turn to let other kids play. I think he was having such a great time that he didn't want to miss out on any of the action. He was running up and down the field, going after the ball. He played defense as well but I don't think he liked it as much as he couldn't go after the ball! He had the chance to be the goalie but he didn't want to be. Michael was really excited when his team scored their first goal too!

It will be neat to see how his playing progresses as the season goes on. Here are a few pictures from the game today:

I want to play soccer ball

A few weeks ago, we signed Michael up to play soccer this fall. I asked him if he would like to play soccer and he told me that he was ready to go to play soccer ball. The day that i signed him up, he wanted to play that day. I told him he would have to wait for a couple of weeks.

He is playing with other 4 and 5 year old boys and girls. Seeing all the little kids out on the field is too cute. The first practice was on Wednesday night. They will have several practices and then their first game will be in about 2 weeks. The team will meet on Monday and Wednesday nights, with the game being on one of those nights.

Last night, they went over a few rules of the game, such as not picking up the ball with your hands and how to kick the ball and stop it when passed to you. Michael was ready to learn and seemed to really have fun on the field. The practice lasted about 45 minutes. Every kid had a turn to kick the ball into the goal. They also worked on passing the ball with another player and stopping the ball after it was kicked to them. After the practice was over, Michael wanted to keep playing. We let him know that he could come back next week to practice some more. I can't wait to see the first game.
