Sleeping Everywhere

Ever since Katie has transitioned from her crib into the toddler bed, she has been having sleep issues. She doesn't want to stay in bed after we tuck her in. I hear her walking around upstairs and her bedroom door opens and closes several times in a row. We have started putting the gate on the door if she comes out more than 2 times but I usually take it off once we go upstairs so she can use the bathroom.

Her new thing in the past week or so is just falling asleep wherever the mood strikes her. This is on the floor in the hallway, bedroom, and the stairway landing. It's pretty funny because Todd and I never know where we may find her. These are just a few of the places she has fallen asleep. Why she wants to fall asleep on the floor and not her bed is beyond me. I guess she will learn once she wakes up with a stiff neck!

Exhausted

Katie was up today for the day at 5:00am, which is not her usual time. However, she got up to go to the bathroom and did not go back to sleep. We had a busy morning with Michael's opening day of baseball at 11:00. She ran around there and played on the playground. We got home around 2:00 and then ate lunch. Katie and I were sitting at the kitchen table. I looked over at her and this is what I saw.

I can count a handful of times that she has fallen asleep anywhere besides the carseat or being rocked. I brought her upstairs and put her in bed when I found out that she still has some food in her mouth. She finished chewing and then went to sleep. Hopefully she won't get up again at 5am soon!

Never Enough Sleep

Sleep is something that we always seem to have a shortage of in this house. The kids normally get to bed between 8 and 8:30. However, during the week, it's pretty hard to wake Michael up, even though he's up bright and early on the weekends. I always wonder what that's about and have thought about telling him there is no school the next day so he gets up without me having to wake him.

Katie has transitioned pretty well to her bed. Now that she is wearing underwear at night, this usually results in at least one or two trips to the bathroom. This would be fine if she didn't want me to tuck her back in. So I am getting interrupted sleep just about every night. I feel like I am getting too old for this.

The third sleep issue is that I can't seem to go to bed early. Once Todd and I settle in for the night, it's our time to catch up on our days and relax. I like to watch TV, go on the computer and read. I often do this for too long, just taking in the relative quiet. I know that I should attempt to go to bed before midnight but it just seems to come way too fast.

I really want to make more of an effort to get to bed earlier at night. Maybe it would make the wakeups better for me, which would allow me to get Michael up a little earlier. It doesn't help that school starts at a ridiculously early hour in my opinion (7:50 am). Quite a change from the preschool start time of 9am!

Why doesn't he want to go to sleep?

Starting when Michael was about 3 months old, he would normally go to bed around 9:00and sleep until 7:00 in the morning. I would nurse him and then put him down in his crib and not a peep out of him. He slept through the night for quite a while.

Sometime around the time he turned 2, he started climbing out of the crib. Todd was sleeping in bed and one morning, he heard Michael say his name. When he opened his eyes, Michael was right there! We had to change his crib to the toddler bed and that's when the sleeping troubles began. Michael would routinely get up out of the bed 4 or 5 times a night and come in our room to try to sleep with us. We would take him back to his room most nights until about 5:00. After that, we were exhausted (this was worse than a newborn) and just let him sleep with us. Not a peep from him and we often had to wake him up.

Finally we needed to get some sleep so we bought a gate and put it up on his bedroom door. We met resistance for the first few nights and made several trips to his bedroom door but he finally realized there was nowhere to go and starting sleeping all night again, for the most part. This was a good thing as I had just found out I was pregnant with Katie and needed all the sleep I could get.

In December, we moved him into his new room and got him a big boy bed. We left the gate off for a few nights and he never got up. Apparently all he wanted was a regular bed like us. The boy is no dummy....he knew grown-up mattresses, pillows and comforters were more comfortable than his toddler bed!

Fast forward a few months and he started the stalling game. He tries to think of every possible tactic to keep from going to sleep at night. After he gets showered and dressed in his PJ's, we start the bedtime routine anywhere from 8:15 to 8:45. He gets to pick out a book to read, we tuck him in and leave the room. Or at least that's how it should go.....this is more like how it actually is. Michael gets out of the shower and runs around upstairs naked laughing hysterically. He finally calms down and comes into his room to put his PJs on after many times of us pretending to go downstairs. After getting dressed, there is normally one bathroom attempt that isn't needed but he knows we won't say no. We read the book (or not) depending on how much time has elapsed. Finally go to tuck him in, he wants to get out of bed and go downstairs.....or play with a toy. By the time he finally goes to sleep, an hour could easily pass by.

He runs all day and plays hard but fights sleep. I wish that I could trade places with him as I would gladly love to go to bed at 9:00. Surely there is some way to make him thinking going to bed is fun......

Katie's 2 week appointment

Katie's 2 week appointment was today. She is 2 weeks, 2 days old. Here are her stats:

Weight: 7 lbs 12oz

Height: 21 inches

She weighed 7 lbs 8.8oz at birth so she is above her birth weight, which is what her doctor looks for at the 2 week checkup. She is eating well so I am not surprised she has exceeded her birth weight. She doesn't really have a specific nighttime sleep pattern yet but every couple of nights, she will sleep for 5 hours in one stretch. That makes for a very happy mom the next day!

She is already starting to lift her head to get a look at the world around her. Her cord still hasn't fallen off yet so she doesn't get too much tummy time. She just uses the time on your shoulder as tummy time to lift her head and work her neck muscles.

Here are some pictures of Katie for your viewing pleasure!
